Review:

I am very pleased to have discovered David McDonald as an author. After reading his book (Enlightment), I was intrigued by his method of writing about the life of a sergeant stationed in Kandahar, Afghanistan. While browsing through his other publications, I came across the poetry eBook I am currently reviewing, and wanted to give it a try.

The Medal

You hang upon the study wall, looking so very well earned

Unaware of your awful cost, the lives that you have turned

You can hang there and shine so brightly, even without the sun

You are completely oblivious, to the damage that you have done

Bold lettering is printed all around your glinting edge

Looking like some honourable and grateful pledge

Given to so many thousands as a countries thanks

Not the slightest consideration for the cost…

Why when I have asked does nobody really care

When comrades have already died still no one is there

My friends took their lives, find some help, they knew not how

They ran out of strength and their lives are forfeit now

A form that they gave us, tells us we get priority care

When we go and try to get it, it is not available there

The doctors take the paper and read, then they laugh in our face
