Grammys, Writing, and Comparisons

Seems like forever since I posted anything, but there's not much going on. It is the Grammys tonight though, and I am slightly interested in that. Only slightly because I'm not at all impressed by celebrity and I don't think the people/groups that win awards in general (music or otherwise) necessarily deserve them--sometimes it seems clear that popularity or politics are more involved than any real talent or quality--but I find it interesting none-the-less and am always…

Number 4 and a new cover

Here I am with the fourth volume of my story published by Trestle Press. All I can do is give thanks for all of the readers that have made it possible to call this a "best-selling" series.

You can get the newest story on Kindle by clicking here:

Set Free: An Amish Journey - Vol. 4 Lost Son Found

What do you think of the new cover design? I think it really sets my story apart and I feel pretty good. I like how the title looks painted on to the side of the…

Getting to know You

Do you know the song, Getting to Know You? It was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein and first sung by Deborah Kerr in the 1956 production of The King and I. Julie Andrews sang it in the 2006 remake. “Getting to know you. Getting to know all about you. Getting to like you. Getting to hope you’ll like me.”

In “real” life, people get to know us and we get to know them gradually. We all have a back…

Stand Alone vs. Series Novels

When I conceived the idea for my first mystery/suspense novel, Mixed Messages, my goal was to write a stand alone novel. I planned to introduce and develop my characters, tell their story and, by the end of the book, tie up any loose ends, leaving the reader satisfied. My plan is still basically the same but my goal has changed.

As I got further and further into writing my novel, I…

Review: One Small Victory by Maryann Miller

Excellent! That is one small word that hardly describes a novel written with such heart. This is a story of a young mother who is faced with the death of her teenage son. He is not involved with drugs but his friend who was driving was, and this friend survived. The crush of pain left me breathless as I read and tried to imagine how Jenny must feel as she mourns. The description of this period in time was so intense that I had to cry along with her. Yet, Jenny must be strong because her…

Review of the Ordinary Life & Extraordinary Death of Josh Turner by David Treciak

I’m advising readers to read, re-read, and study the ending of this book because it is, in my estimation, pure literary genius. Not an easy job, conveying a dying man’s myriad thoughts and interactions throughout a whole novel in a manner that keeps the reader turning pages, but the author does it with a cerebral, yet tongue-in-cheek style that smacks a little of J.D. Salinger. Yep, it’s that good.

Josh Turner is dying, a painful and slow cancerous death. His mind whirls with amazing…

Review of Covert Element by John L. Betcher

America’s war on drugs has touched an untold number of lives and cost national treasure that could have been used in so many better ways. This story of a small town detective’s involvement in this war makes for compelling reading.

The seeds for this episode were laid in a U.S. Special Forces operation some years before in Mexico. The raid was successful in its initial goal, but it set the stage for the problems that would soon face James Becker and his wife in northern hamlet of Red…
